In the heart of the historic Rheingau region, just a few kilometers south of the Eberbach monastery, is the VDP. wine and sparkling wine estate Barth in Hattenheim, with world-renowned vineyards. Barth's wines and sparkling wines have been certified organic since the 2013 vintage. For 30 years, sparkling wine has been produced here using the traditional method and today Barth is considered one of the flagships of the VDP. It is also Mark Barth who has been instrumental in driving forward efforts to establish a separate sparkling wine classification within the VDP. With the 2014 Schützenhaus Brut Nature, the first classified sparkling wine is now available. Sparkling wine production at Barth is 100 percent manual work. A bottle has been moved 50 times before it reaches the customer. The white line at the bottom of the bottle is the sign that the bottles have been shaken by hand. The minimum maturation period on the yeast is 24 months, although the top wines are allowed to remain on the yeast for considerably longer. The long ageing on the lees gives the wine its structure and preserves the typicality of the grape varieties.
